Cockroaches are one of the most unsettling insects in the world due to the many, many diseases and parasites they can spread to people they live close to. Unfortunately, they’re incredibly common in the Las Vegas area, especially in residential areas.
Individually, cockroaches can be difficult to kill, and eliminating an entire infestation can be next to impossible if you’re working on your own. Because of this, it is important to know how to identify cockroaches and how to keep them away from your home.

What Do Cockroaches Look Like?
There are many different species of cockroach, but only three that you are likely to find in Las Vegas. These are the American Cockroach, the German Cockroach, and the Oriental Cockroach. Here is how you can identify each type:
American cockroaches are reddish-brown and have an almost greasy look to them. They can reach up to three inches long, making them the physically largest species in the country.
German cockroaches are the most frequently-encountered cockroaches in the country. They are tan to light yellow or brown and have two black stripes running behind their head.
Oriental cockroaches reach up to an inch long. They are jet black and can be mistaken for beetles. These roaches are most commonly found outdoors around pools and patios.
Why Should I Worry About Cockroaches?
As previously mentioned, cockroaches are one of the most dangerous household pests in the area. But, in order to really understand just how dangerous they are, it’s important to point out all the health risks they pose.
Cockroaches spread over three dozen types of diseases including but not limited to dysentery, gastroenteritis, salmonellosis, and more. They are also known to trigger asthma attacks and allergic reactions, as well as contaminate any food and/or water sources they come into contact with.
The reason these common pests are so dangerous is they often find shelter in garbage, sewers, bathrooms, and even dead animals. They then carry whatever diseases or germs they come into contact with and spread these around your home. They even have little spikes on their legs called spines that are meant to pick up organic matter or germs and transfer it to other surfaces.
And, because cockroaches are often found in the kitchen, they are spreading these germs and bits of gross organic matter into your food.
Why Are Cockroaches So Difficult to Kill?
Along with being dangerous to your health, cockroaches are nearly impossible to kill and control. They can sneak through the tiniest crack in your home and even enter through your pipes.
Once inside your home roaches multiply quickly, making it extremely difficult to completely eliminate an infestation once it is underway. They are resistant to pest control and can even live multiple weeks without their heads! Plus, they can live in places people don’t even think to look like outlets and behind cupboards.
