The Trick To Keeping Scorpions Away From Your Las Vegas Property

Modern insect and arachnid-related cinema have really given arthropods such as scorpions a bad reputation, though it’s not entirely unfounded. Most movies will use the biggest, most intimidating-looking specimens to strike fear into their viewers, but truthfully it’s the smaller species that pose a bigger threat to humanity. Either way, nobody wants to find any kind of scorpions crawling around their Las Vegas property, so it’s important to know all the tricks to keep them away.

Common Scorpions That Infest Las Vegas Properties

There are about 25 different species of scorpions that can be found in the Las Vegas area, but not nearly that many will actually infest yards and homes. Of those 25, there are four that are pretty common to find around Las Vegas neighborhoods:

  • Giant desert hairy scorpion – 4 to 5 ½ inches long, pale bodies with dark brown backs, and fine brown hairs all over
  • Arizona bark scorpion – around 2 ½ inches long, tan-colored bodies with slightly darker backs, tails curl up flat to the ground when resting
  • Striped tail scorpion – roughly 3 inches long, light yellowish-brown colored bodies, distinctive dark brown stripes along the length of the tail
  • Emperor scorpion – 8 to 9 inches long, color varies between dark brown, black, and dark green

Most scorpions don’t pack much of a punch with their stings, and a lot of them have been compared to feeling a lot more like a bee sting than anything else. Arizona bark scorpions, on the other hand, are much more dangerous. Mortality rates are incredibly low, but death by bark scorpion is completely possible. Symptoms from a bark scorpion sting could be as mild as sweating, drooling, and nausea and vomiting, but can be as severe as difficulty breathing, high blood pressure, and accelerated heart rate.

Tips To Keeping Scorpions Off Of Your Las Vegas Property

Scorpions are attracted to shelter, moisture, and food sources, and they often nest in large numbers. Since scorpions are carnivorous, their diets usually consist of insects, spiders, and even small lizards depending on the species. • Avoid over-watering your garden, and ensure your lawn is draining properly
  • Check to make sure there aren’t any leaky pipes, repair if necessary
  • Repair any water damage
  • Invest in a dehumidifier for moisture-retaining rooms such as kitchen, bathroom, laundry room, basement
  • Remove dead logs, rocks, wood and brush piles, and dead leaves from your property
  • Other pest preventative measures, including sweeping and mopping regularly, vacuuming, wiping down countertops daily, cleaning food prep areas, proper food storage, tight-fitting trash can lids both indoors and outdoors
  • Fill in and repair any cracks or holes in the exterior of your homes, such as siding, foundation, exposed wood, roof, and trim, around pipes and wires
