If you’ve ever seen that little trail of ants in your home or on your property, you know there are more ants behind the scenes waiting to come out and play. Ants are notorious for their large armies and sprawling colonies that can ravage a pantry, or take over your yard.
Ants may seem harmless, but almost all ant species in the Las Vegas area are invasive. While some are just a nuisance, others can destroy your property, or pose potential health risks.
Three Nuisance Ants in Las Vegas
Many of the ants you’ll encounter around your home are just a plain annoyance. They won’t cause any harm to your health, but they can contaminate both human and pet food, as well as countertops. If left unmanaged, the infestation can grow out of control, making it more difficult to eradicate.
Three of the most common nuisance ants are the Argentine ant, pavement ant, and harvester ant.
Argentine Ants. These ants are shiny dark brown or black in color, and they move together in wide trails. Their colonies are known for being extremely large, and hard to control.
Pavement Ants. Pavement ants are known for being small, black ants that you usually see hiding out in sidewalk cracks, as this is their favorite place to be. They eat a large variety of food.
Harvester Ants. These ants are tiny red, brown, or black, and only reach to about ½ an inch in length. They get their name because they harvest seeds to use as food for their colonies.
Two Types of Dangerous Ants in Las Vegas
Now that we’ve covered a few types of common nuisance ants, let’s talk about the species of ants that can be dangerous for your home. The two types of species that can cause problems for your home are the fire ant, and the carpenter ant. Fire ants can be dangerous for their bite and sting, and carpenter ants are able to cause major structural damage to your home and property.
Fire ants can be identified by their reddish-brown color, and small stinger. Their bites aren’t always dangerous unless you’re allergic, but it can be quite painful and unpleasant.
Carpenter ants are one of the more frustrating species you’ll encounter in Las Vegas, because they tunnel through wood to build their nests. This means they can damage any wood structure including framing, furniture, flooring, and even drywall. These ants are red and black in color.
