“AaaaaH!” It usually starts with a scream in the kitchen…someone saw a cockroach!

The first instinct is to grab a shoe or possibly a hammer, but we know that won’t fix it. What is to be done? The first step is to know what kind of cockroach we have. All are not created equal!

Cockroaches have figured out how to thrive and adapt since before the dinosaurs were here, so they know how to survive

American and German cockroaches are two of the most common species of cockroaches that are found in homes and other buildings. The more difficult cockroach to remove is the German Cockroach. Methods to remove these two types are very different. Let’s look at how to identify the difference between the two species:

1. Appearance:

American cockroaches are larger than German cockroaches, typically measuring between 1.5 to 2 inches in length, while German cockroaches are usually around 0.5 to 0.6 inches in length. American cockroaches are reddish-brown and have a distinctive yellowish figure-8 pattern on their thorax, while German cockroaches are light brown or tan and have two dark stripes on their thorax.

2. Habitat:

American cockroaches are often found in warm, humid environments such as basements, crawl spaces, and sewers. They are also commonly found in commercial buildings such as restaurants and grocery stores. German cockroaches, on the other hand, are typically found in kitchens and bathrooms, as they are attracted to warmth and moisture.

3. Reproduction:

German cockroaches reproduce at a much faster rate than American cockroaches, with females capable of producing up to 6 egg cases, each containing 30 to 40 eggs, in their lifetime. American cockroaches produce fewer egg cases, with each case containing 15 to 20 eggs.

4. Behavior:

Both American and German cockroaches are nocturnal and will scavenge for food at night. However, German cockroaches are more likely to infest homes and other buildings, as they are better adapted to living in indoor environments and are capable of reproducing quickly.

5. Control:

Both species of cockroaches can be difficult to control, but German cockroaches are generally considered to be the more challenging of the two. This is because they reproduce more quickly and are more likely to infest homes and other buildings. Effective control measures for German cockroaches typically involve a combination of baiting, trapping, and insecticide treatments.

American and German cockroaches may look similar at first glance, but there are several key differences in their appearance, habitat, behavior, and control. Understanding these differences can help identify and control cockroach infestations in homes and other buildings.
